Maggie Gyllenhaal, Style Maverick
May 28th 2007 00:57
From her first appearance alongside brother Jake in Donnie Darko, enjoyably quirky as the impatient older sister to her role as a masochist in the Secretary (pictured above) Gyllenhaal has, on the whole, chosen film roles and fashion wisely.
To this year's Oscars she donned a delectable Proenza Schouler gown of midnight blue satin with the ever-elegant one shoulder strap. With such a long and lean silhouette and little cleavage to speak of, Ms Gyllenhaal accentuated her best features with this dress. The simplicity of hair-style and accessories only complemented her overall aesthetic.
As an American actress in Paris for a shoot, Gyllenhaal was in one of the more successful sections of Paris Je T'aime, a film you might still be able to catch at the theatre if you're lucky. To its New York premiere this year, hosted by Yves Saint Laurent, she wore a short grey smock dress which to all intents and purposes is a shapeless sack but with her beguiling expression, undone hair and laissez faire stance the ensemble looks more chic than slack. And what better way to disguise a post-baby belly than in silk YSL?
Going back in time to last year's Cannes where the film premiered, Gyllenhaal walked the red carpet with her lovely hubby, Peter Saarsgaard and managed to look sexy almost because of her swollen stomach and accompanying cleavage. I can only hope that trapeze lines and empire waists will be in fashion when I consider having a baby, for recent examples of delightful maternity fashion see Naomi Watts and Eva Herzagovina.
We can only wait to see what this remarkable young actress will choose next, both in terms of style and substantive film roles.
