Brace Yourself - Suspenders are in Fashion

May 13th 2006 04:44
I think suspenders (braces) are the best unisex accessories available. I recently saw a girl wearing skinny black ones over a fitted shirt with a black high-waisted pencil skirt and she looked SO good!

I've been trying to find a funky pair in stores, but unfortunately there isn't a huge range. Tsubi and Roy make them, but they’re not exactly affordable for everyone. You can also buy them at Target, which stocks mens’ ones in neutral colours, but they don’t have any bright colours, so your best bet for cheaper patterned or quirky ones is eBay or an op shop.

Once you've got yourself a pair, try using them in one of these cute and edgy outfits:

Dior Homme Spring/Summer 2006

I think super skinny suspenders are hot on guys. I can imagine them with skinny black jeans and a tee too.

Marc by Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2006

Try this awesome asymmetrical look – it seems to work best with high-waisted skirts or pants.

Costume National Homme Spring Summer 2006

Patterned suspenders are pulled off well with solid colours in the rest of the outfit.

Kris Van Assche Spring Summer 2006

The thing I love about suspenders is that they're an all-year-round accessory. You can wear them with pants in winter, or minis and shorts in summer, as above.

Jessica Stam wearing suspenders backstage at Cacharel Spring Summer 2006

I absolutely adore this look – I think they look a little better when they are worn taut as opposed to loose.

Amanda Moore from Luella show

Matching suspenders with bottoms is good if you can find a similar pair. The exactly matched pair above definitely looks hot.

I think those outfits all look so fab. I can't wait to get a pair myself so I can copy them!

Sisi, your posts rock the spot... great pics.

I don't think I could pull off the suspender look without looking like an old-fashioned gangster...

Thanks Cibby! Yeah I'm worried I won't be able to pull it off either Not that I'd look like an old-fashioned gangster haha...I'm more worried that my style isn't really structured enough to get the look right...But I'm going to buy a pair to try anyway because I love the masculine look of them (I've been channelling Marlene Dietrich lately in my outfits).

Heheh whoever I'm channelling has a LOT to answer for! =P

Do you reckon you should have a masculine or feminine face to pull of masculine styles?

I don't know amy...I have no idea what kinda face I have but I've been told I pull it off...probably a bit more masculine, cos I can't imagine someone like Marilyn Monroe wearing the masculine look well.

are you kidding? Soft feminine faces look great in men's clothing... it's like, no matter what the style, her raw femininity breaks through...

Yeah that's a good point too, actually As I said, I don't really know...in my opinion, men's clothing is just the bomb on all girls
