Beauty and Fashion Tips that Work
May 10th 2007 06:56
I was going through my mammoth collection of magazines the other day (and I really do mean mammoth, several years’ worth of Cosmos, Vogues and Marie Claires), looking at all the “tips” and “advice” they offer and thinking about how few of them actually seem to work. I mean, who really wants to wash their hair in beer/egg whites/your own urine (ok, I may have made that last one up…).
But occasionally you get a suggestion that makes sense, doesn’t cost much or take up too much time, and most importantly, works! So here is my list of top 10 tips that work.
1. Before you put lipstick/gloss on (or if you just have cracked lips) wet a face washer or the corner of a soft towel and gently wipe your lips. It makes them look so much better and they’ll feel softer too. Nothing is worse than lipstick cacked onto cracked lips.
2. For an instant boost for shiny hair, blast it with cold water before you get out of the shower. It’s really good for your skin too, though very hard to do during winter.
3. And while we’re on showers, don’t ever ever spray water directly onto your face, as the pressure and heat can burst capillaries, and that’s not good. Instead, cup the water into your hands and gently splash it on your face.
4. Invest in Lucas’ Pawpaw ointment. Seriously this stuff is the so versatile, I use it as everything from lip balm to eye cream. You’ll never dry out again. It’s fantastic on blisters too.
5. Don’t over invest in out-there trends. If you’re going to splurge, opt for classic pieces (e.g. trench coat, black or grey pants, a basic pair of heels, white shirt, etc.)
6. Do not wear white underwear under white clothes; it actually highlights the underwear instead of hiding it. Skin colour/nude is the way to go.
7. If you’re a bit pear-shaped or self-conscious about your butt or thighs, go to your closet and set fire to every pair of white pants you own. I’m serious, it’s a total no-go zone.
8. Always balance an outfit, whether it be in terms of colour, volume or how much skin you reveal. If you’ve got an all-black outfit give it some life with coloured shoes or bag, if you go for volume on top try slim-line on the bottom and if you’re wearing a short skirt don’t show a lot of cleavage (or I guarantee you will look skanky).
9. Don’t let the haters get you down, dress for yourself! Be comfortable and proud in what you wear and you will wear it well. Don’t wear something extra revealing just to get a guy’s attention, and similarly don’t be hemmed in by what your friends wear. As my mum always said, “it’s not what you wear, but how you wear it.” Wise words Mum, wise words.
10. Good posture makes any outfit. Pull in your shoulders, back and stomach (keep them as relaxed as possible), tuck your tailbone under, tilt your chin up and smile!
Anyway, here are some basic ways to feel better inside and out. Hope they helped!
