Gucci sucks

Just about anyone with any style steers clear of Gucci on the whole and their Autumn/Winter 07 collection only affirms that general principle. Let’s take a look at some examples.
Lily Donaldson is a very attractive woman, she’s a highly successful model due to her long lean proportioned body but this particularly offensive ensemble makes her look short, squat and downright tubby. The colours are just a shade off being appealing and the kind of textural juxtaposition employed to such great effect by better designers goes horribly wrong here. It seems the aim was something along the lines of Ralph Lauren Collection’s 20s inspired aviation themed shows but the postmodern pastiche is little more than ugly.
And this cream pattered number. I understand that fashion is necessarily cyclic and that trends come and go over time but usually the really hideous fads are left behind. Not so in the case of this quasi-80s printed dress intentionally worsened by some severe and dowdy knee high boots. Not to mention those sunglasses. The only thing I’d keep is the hair.
And just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse, here is the dress we’re going to see Jessica Simpson wearing on the red carpet with some coordinated lipstick do doubt. Orange and black is rarely a successful combination but when used in the context of someone’s 70s curtains, again cut to fatten the skinniest of figures and reigned in with a bulky black eyesore of a belt the look really hits rock bottom.
No, it wasn’t all bad. The show concluded with some rather striking black column dresses which would suit your Cate Blanchett or Gisele Bundchen perhaps. By avoiding the ugly shades and frumpy cuts, this dress looks stylish and timeless not to mention flattering. Why couldn’t they use the same approach for the rest of the collection? We’ll never know.
