Current Fashion Obsessions

Here are my predictions for clothing/shoe/accessory obsessions of Autumn/Winter 2006:
- Polka dots: I love them! They're establishing themselves as the flavour of the month, with countless celebrities such as Kate Moss and Nicole Ritchie being spotted wearing them (pardon the pun!). For authentic big 80s dots, check out your local op shop or vintage store.
- Platform shoes: They're back as the shoe of the season. Their comeback can most likely be credited to Christian Louboutin, whose black round toe pumps with cork heel and platform have been sported by many celebrities (including the ever-stylish Olsen twins).
- Equestrian boots: Fashionistas are giving their feet a rest this season with the preference of flat equestrian boots, especially soft leather ones to slouch over skinny jeans.
- Yellow: Formerly considered a brash, kitschy colour, yellow has been reincarnated as the new shade of casual chic. As the weather turns chilly, it's time to warm up your wardrobe.
- Electric blue: Salma Hayek's electric blue Versace gown at the Oscars is the best use of the colour I've seen this season, but it can be pulled off nicely by most skin tones and body shapes.
- Librarian chic: Large unnecessary spectacles, hair pulled tightly back, and garments in varying shades of grey make up the latest runway look!
- Shrunken blazers: A suitable item of clothing for those who favour preppy chic! For a professional look, wear a shrunken blazer with fitted dress pants as a spin on the traditional suit.
- Patent leather: Whether it's a shiny pair of patent pumps or a patent handbag, the return of patent leather perfectly matches the recent dressy runway looks!
- Dior Homme: Hedi Slimane's 'neat yet grungy' look is the obsession of the season for men. To channel Dior Homme, try to perfect the natural just woken-up look (but dress in formal attire).
- Leggings: They're more figure hugging than pants, yet much comfier than cumbersome stockings. 3/4 length leggings are particularly trendy, and can be teamed with a skirt or dress for a more delicate, feminine look than the traditional 80s look, where they're worn alone.
- Suspenders/braces: I think they'd look good with high-waisted bottoms, or worn hanging down so that they form an X across the buttocks, as seen on the Roy catwalk at the recent L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival.
- Aviator jacket: Best worn in any kind of leather or suede, this jacket will probably be an enormous success because it can be worn in an informal way with ripped jeans and sneakers, yet can also be dressed up with suit trousers and loafers, not to mention the fact that it's a fairly unisex garment.
- Cardigans: It seems like everyone's looking for cardies these days (I know I am)! The styles in store at the moment include wrap, woollen, basic cotton, embellished, extra long, cropped, and so on. They're this season's most wearable articles of clothing so stock up!

In all seriousness what would help me look corporate, yet cool? I want to rock it in my part time job with a conservative multinational and I can't wear a 'fro or get my hair into corn rows which was what I wanted to do to my hair. Help, I am so confuzzled!

As for the "corporate cool" look I don't think I'm the best person to ask about hair (I've never been to a hairdresser in my life haha) but in terms of clothes, check out the Dior Homme and Calvin Klein Collection coverage for Fall 2006. Dior has some beautiful suits but CK incorporates more daywear and is probably better suited to your job environment. I think a failproof outfit would be a nice shirt, tailored pants, classy leather shoes, and a vest or suit jacket (not both simultaneously though, if a vest isn't warm enough go for a sweater). Hope that helps
And Cibby I happen to love huge sunnies! They're great for hiding tired eyes
Unfortunately for for you Cibby, I don't see the trend dying anytime too soon. Many leading sunglass designers have released new styles of oversized sunglasses so I guess you'll have to put up with them a little while longer...
