The Fashion Psychic
July 20th 2007 04:32
"Hmm.. let me now gaze into my crystal ball. Here it is.. here is an outfit that will make you 'POP'! Now why don't you wear this one, darling?"
Okay, I may have obviously exaggerated the crystal ball part there, but put that aside and you get a man with a vision for future trends! And I’m talking about André Leon Talley! He can certainly be defined as the ‘psychic’ of the fashion world today. Well, one of the ‘psychics’ apparently, apart from Anna Wintour. But I want to talk about him in this particular post.. on the hope to shed some new light upon him.
André Leon Talley has definitely become a huge influence to the development of the fashion world for the past 25 years. He has often lent a helping hand to a number of celebrities that were suffering from bad fashion experiences and turned them into fashion trend-setters. He is now the editor-at-large of Vogue magazine and can often be seen sitting next to Anna Wintour at the front rows of fashion shows in Milan, Paris, London and New York.
Speaking of Anna, she is the editor-in-chief of the American Vogue and has become a fashion icon herself with her cute bob haircut and sunglasses. Interestingly, she became the inspiration for the ‘devil’ character in the novel ‘Devil Wears Prada’, alongside André which also became the inspiration for the ‘Nigel’ character in the novel.
Now going back to André’s past.. he really learnt the true meaning of luxury after being raised by his hypercritical grandmother in a somewhat modest household. He attended the North Carolina Central University and later received a master’s degree in French from Brown University. During this time, he was known to become friends with neighbouring students from the Rhode Island School of Design and often went with them on weekend trips to New York.
Those were all in the past though, he now lives in a world filled with flashlights and great clothes! One of his most recent noted headlines was his collaboration with Jennifer Hudson. His idea for the notorious ‘metallic bolero’ worn by Hudson to the Oscars received a huge number of horrendous criticisms from the critics and other people that were too influenced by those critics to speak their own minds. Relax, people! She still looked gorgeous! She was a rising star at the time, so I think a shiny number like that is only appropriate at the time to represent a fresh new look.
I didn’t even get paid to say this but, André Leon Talley shouldn’t have been blamed for things like that. I just think we should know by now that fashion shouldn’t be too serious (unless you’re going on a meeting with your Prime Minister or President, of course), and André is the man that can help us realise that!
