An ad for trousers from the 70s: remarkably sexist AND creepy
May 22nd 2008 09:50
On BoingBoing, a fascinating vintage magazine ad, trying to sell a pair of pants by insinuating that men need to kill women as trophies:
"It's nice to have a girl around the house"
Really? This seemed like a good idea in the 70s? A man standing on a woman's head, the woman's head forming the head of a tiger rug.
It's sick and reflective of those times. I hope it didn't sell any pants - what kind of man would think "Hey, I need some pants!"
From the ad:
"Though she was a tiger lady, our hero didn’t have to fire a shot to floor her. After one look at his Mr. Leggs slacks, she was ready to have him walk all over her. That noble styling sure soothes the savage heart! If you’
like your own doll-to-doll carpeting, hunt up a pair of these he-man Mr. Leggs slacks. Such as our new automatic wash wear blend of 65% “
acron®” and 35% rayon–incomparably wrinkle-resistant. About $12.95 at plush-carpeted stores."
Mmmm, Mr. Leggs. The feel of Dacron and Rayon on your hardened legs makes me want to kneel at the mercy of your enormous gun, soothing my savage heart.
Have we come a long way? Perhaps - though I think I see quite a bit of sexist advertising, albeit not as brazenly offensive as this one...

is this some warped reaction to the feminist movement where is was a point of pride to tame a wild independent woman with your virile manly pants?

Ruby, do you think people still carry this attitude? I'd say we've grown quite a bit since then... I'm a pretty regular guy, and I found this quite offensive.
morgan, I wonder about the ad company that thought this was a good idea?

Cibb, can I rest my case?
p.s for the record, I didn't mean to imply that all men were sexist, only that sexism continues to permeate into all areas of life, even in the supposedly enlightened western world.

I think there might be an element of this in it. I've heard tell of erotica aimed at (a subset of) men and even porn sites with this exact theme.

thats really interesting!
it sounds a bit like a sadism/masochism or domination/submission fetish doesnt it?
i wonder if bill clinton has these fantasies about poor hillary?
any woman who dares to escape to kitchen may be fodder for bondage based erotica . . . feminists are the whipping boys (or girls) for the disenfranchised and frustrated male?
either way i found the inclusion of the pants an absurdly unrelated product and had a good laugh at the stupidity of the image haha
