Alexander McQueen - Fashion Monster
I know I am not alone in my appreciation for the exciting designs of Alexander McQueen. There is a distinct sensuality to all his wardrobes that has made the name synonymous with cool, daring outfits.
Demanding the spotlight with precisely contoured lines that lead the eye to intriguing cuts and hems, McQueen is a celebrity of fashion. His exhibitions and shows are exuberant and notoriously theatrical, boldly courting controversies that have some labelling him “The Holligan of English fashion.”
Born Lee Alexander McQueen in 1969, the future mogul chose his fate at a young age while designing dresses for his 3 sisters. Not scholastically minded, he left school at 16 to become an apprenticeship as a tailor on Savile Row. Working for several established names his clientele included Mikhail Gorbachev and Prince Charles.
After a period of travel he returned to London and enrolled in the prestigious Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. His Graduation Collection was swiftly purchased by Isabella Blow and launched his career.
Earning his reputation quickly with early runway shows that challenged convention. His “Highland Rape” show introduced the “Bumster” trousers and immediately made him one of the most talked about faces in the industry.
In 1996 he caused another revolution by taking over as head designer of Givenchy. A rebellious nature saw him quoted as saying the founder of the famous house was “irrelevant” and he even bad mouthed his own debut collection for the big name label.
During this same period though he became the youngest person ever to win the “British designer of the year”, an award he has now won three times. Since then his reputation has exploded with notable collaborations with Gucci and Puma amongst others.
In October this year Mcqueen’s teaming with Mac Cosmetics has seen an applauded catwalk model style inspired by the Elizabeth Taylor film Cleopatra. Now his international boutiques are thriving and he is often courted by celebrities and will undoubtedly become one of the benchmark influences of the new millennium.
