I feel that before I begin a disclaimer is in order. I did make every attempt to find male models and some examples of what the men can wear to sex themselves up this festive season, but I couldn’t find any online images. No harm though because the women more than compensate with ample options to conjure up yuletide spirit.

Though not all these outfits are about flashing the flesh they are cute and undeniably sensual. Predominantly sticking to Santa’s Coke red and white colour scheme, I have never been more curious what could be inside the stockings hung with care.

Sure the egg nog warms the tummy but these outfits sizzle the cockles. Bringing sugar and spice and all things nice to a private carols by candlelight. Maybe a party at Heff’s Playboy mansion would also be appropriate. (Wow I think I have just come up with my Christmas themed sware for this year.)

Christmas was once a conservative holiday, a time for family and friend to celebrate an innocent get together. Now however the silly season just keeps getting more exuberant and of course the world of fashion has embraced it.

J'adore Dior

I realise I’m running a little behind the couture shows but I am grasping the moment because, as the title indicates, my infatuation with Dior continues, exacerbated by Galliano’s recent designs for their couture show.

Couture is the aesthetic height of the fashion industry epitomising Oscar Wilde’s motto: “art for art’s sake”. Certainly some of the dresses are sold but couture is a millstone round the ankle of fashion houses as far as profit is concerned. The hours and effort spend to make each dress are Herculean, the expense of fabric and beading utterly Olympian (as in the Mount not the games

Junya Watanabe or College Days Revisited

In this rainy wintry weather looking at Junya Watanabe’s men’s collection in Milan I was reminiscing about college. For those of you unfamiliar with the Canberra education system, years 11 and 12 at public schools are called colleges, are located on their own grounds, have no uniforms and the teachers are called by their first names. There’s no HSC, assessment is close to the university system and generally they’re far nicer places to be. Anyway when I was at college the boys used to dress like this, themselves nostalgic for some sort of 80s punky/motorcycle rider style.

Prada: progenitor of postmodern pastiche

In my habitual internet trawlings I came across quite a feat on the Prada website. Admittedly I didn’t much like this season’s collection but the means by which it is represented is a true cultural document. Prada demonstrates wit, self-reflexivity and pastiche in a way that many other ‘postmodernists’ should envy. As a European luxury brand, descended from a grand tradition to a commercial reality, Prada is a modern day icon but the self-representation offers an entirely new perspective on the brand.

One of the most striking models of the contemporary brat pack is Jessica Stam, a statuesque Canadian who has the kind of natural physique required for catwalk shows. She is indeed long and slender but there is nothing painful about the proportions of her legs or the position of her clavicle. My general rule is that if the knee is wider than the thigh there’s a problem but Stam is in proportion as you can see from the Stella McCartney show.

Exquisitely detailed leather jacket


This is a brand to which I was largely indifferent before stumbling across some of their pieces on net-a-porter.com which is incidentally where these images come from. Their recent string of advertisements in British and American Vogue also helped. A certain wistful nostalgia resonates through the garments while an accompanying attention to detail and quirk of cut pulls them out of the average everyday
