Art reflected life in 1977’s Annie Hall. Woody Allen and Diane Keaton were in fact dating, Woody had previously had a career in comedy like his character, Alvy, and Diane’s real surname was Hall. Her nickname? Annie.
Costume designer Ruth Morley styled our stars in this acclaimed “nervous romance”, working in conjunction with Ralph Lauren to achieve the preppy masculine look Ms. Keaton made famous in this film. It is rumoured that these were in fact Diane's own clothes. Original to its time, Annie spawned a thousand tie purchases for women, and became one of the key looks of the late 70’s for the counter-culture.

This look translates through to today. Kate Moss and Sienna Miller revived the waistcoat a few years back, slowly but surely we’ve seen ties re-enter the female wardrobe, coupled with man shirts and baggy pants. Brogue boots are making a comeback. Man style dressing is definitely "in".

Waistcoats are more freely available since their recent celebrity popularity (see aforementioned Sienna). Hunt around your local op-shops for a classic baggier style, or if money is no issue, you could go for this structured Alexander McQueen version, found at Net-a-Porter.

Ties for women are harder to come by these days. Some chain stores such as Portmans and Sportsgirl have stocked them in recent years. To find something truly original, head to a quality vintage store, try eBay or hunt around for one at an on-line locale.

To complete the quirky and offbeat feel to this outfit, you’ll need a hat. You could go for the boho floppy style, but if you’re true to Annie the brim will be of medium length, and sat low, toward the back of your head. The closest style I found was below from Hats in the Belfry.

You’ll need a big enormous oversized massive straw tote bag. Annie carried everything in hers including her tennis racquet, that’s how big. These are tricky to find....so here’s one that was pretty too. I should mention, though, to make sure it's large.

If you haven’t seen the film, I found a great clip here that shows some of the best scenes from the film, and conveys the general feel of the movie, with its comedy and charm.
Annie Hall's was a classic style that seems to resurface every decade since, you’ll feel very New-York-neuroses meets seedy cabaret in this ensemble.
