Bathing Beauties

Swimming costumes, bathers, togs, swimsuits or just 'cossie'; all names for the nylon / cotton / lycra combination we like to slip into when we go to the beach or to the pool to dip our bodies into water and have a paddle around.

Combining 1950's modesty with celebrity sass, ladies around the world wanted to look glamourous by donning star style swimsuits and sunnies, and posed for happy snaps in pinup style; on the beach towel, holding a cool drink, or standing by the waterside.

In the movies, Esther Williams was the most well known bathing beauty. Olympic swimmer turned cheesecake photo pinup, she pioneered synchronised swimming as Broadway musical entertainment. These days she has her own line of swimwear, purchasable online, with a distinct retro flavour paying homage to the styles from her heyday.

Modern day swimwear of this ilk is easy to come by as many designers look back to previously popular styles for current collections. Bird Motel currently has a one-piece design in stock from Tigerlily called “Audrey” which has a unique tuxedo feel to the boy-leg styles of the era.

Thanks to the retro revivalists and vintage lovers worldwide, reproductions of 50’s styles in bathing suits are available to purchase on the web, particularly popular in the US. Given that second-hand purchases for swimwear are not a hygienically feasible option, for girls who want to add a bit of cheesecake to their beachwear, this is your best bet.

Found in the boy-legs, often with a ‘skirt’, you can find some great one-pieces at sites like Pinup Girl Clothing, Babygirl Boutique and Stop Staring!. Often modelled by the currently popular pin ups like Bernie Dexter, Masuimi Max and Cherry Dollface, you can also grab a cute 50’s inspired bikini from sites like this, in a pretty polka dot or cherry print.

Grab yourself a pretty cossie from one of these collections, a pair of retro sunglasses, a Hawaiian sarong wrap and a cocktail in a nice big tiki glass.

You’ll be fit for your own cheesecake portrait!

For those of you who know me or read my posts regularly, you will be well aware that I have a penchant for all things vintage, particularly of the 50's and 60's eras. It will come as no surprise then, that last Sunday, when the Historic Houses Trust opened Rose Seidler house in Wahroonga for their annual Fifties Fair, I made my way over to get a gander.

Confessions of the cloth

August 27th 2007 13:02
How long did it take you to get dressed today? I had planned what to wear today well in advance of tucking myself into bed last night. Of course, nothing ever goes to plan. I had chosen a Kinki Gerlinki tent dress with puff sleeves, made of alternating thin stripes of red and blue wool. It has Impressionist style tapestry flowers over it. Oh man, I love it. I usually wear it with a black cardigan, as the dress is enough on its own, but today I was just not content with said cardigan. I then spent the next half an hour trying to figure out what to cover my arms and their goosebumps with (I eventually settled for a black fitted spencer underneath). Trying to sleep through the wardrobe bangs and groans of despair, my boyfriend was witness to my little "episode". He was also witness to a much more panicked, and altogether (with the benefit of hindsight, of course) pathetic case of 'I have nothing to wear' a week earlier. This one lasted an hour, and as a result, I was late to university. Yes, readers, I was freaking out about what to wear to university.

When I admitted to a friend the shames of my shallow life, she confided that she too has days where she feels so uncomfortable she wants to "get off the train and go home". Her self-conscientiousness is also a result of the perils of attending a city university (but to be fair, she goes to a university dedicated to art theory, history and practice

A Portrait of Pedro and Penelope

August 26th 2007 01:42
Pedro and Penelope
"Smile for the camera!"

What do Pedro Almodovar, Penelope Cruz and camera have in common? Is it their Spanish blood? Perhaps yes for both Pedro and Penelope. But there's something else that some of you probably don't know yet, and that is their ability to create great movies! I know I pretty much gave the clue away when I mentioned the camera bit, but apparently there are still many who aren't aware of their brilliant collaboration in movies.

For Australian residents, you’re probably hiding under a rock if you didn’t see any coverage over the last few weeks of the David Jones and Myer Spring/Summer launch shows. Megan Gale and Jennifer Hawkins were parading their respective stores’ wares and championing this season’s trends, sycophantically surrounded by media, buyers and designers alike.

Blame Carrie Bradshaw and her Patricia Field Sex and the City ways, but it seems that the spring trend from the Northern Hemisphere is set to make its way down under. A more streamline and elegant alternative to the hobo and the tote bags we’ve seen lately, introducing the new day clutch

Mums, muttons and lambs

August 20th 2007 12:31
In my dinner shifts as a bistro waitress, I come across a great deal of good and bad outfit decisions. For content purposes, I will refer only to dinner shifts only, as the lunching crowd are somewhat less inclined to look as they dress.

As part of the bourgeoisie crowd, most women aren’t really pushing my style buttons, but most put in some effort. To begin, there are dress codes before entering the venue, such as no hats, no soiled uniforms, no bare feet and no swimwear. However, the lady out for a night on the suburban town with the girls, ladies, man, kids, family or myriad of families is unlikely to be wearing any of the aforementioned outfits, even in the steamiest of Australian summers. I appreciate this modesty and thought. What I don’t appreciate is the severe decline in any form of style and adherence to rules of taste, cut and colour, and sharp increase in the ‘Mumsy’ look

Hair, not the musical

August 19th 2007 10:31
I arrived at work last night to see my manager with her hair down. She has straight dark blonde hair with distinct highlights (read: looks like a half skinned zucchini but in different colours), and I thought it looked very becoming. She thought it looked “messy, like yours”, then did some mime about my hair always being the same messy look. Other colleagues have called it “stylishly unconsidered” and “don’t take this the wrong way, but I really like your messy hair”. Ok, cool. So where and how does hair go from being relaxed to the follicular version of my brother’s room?

My mum and I whittled the discourse on hair down to not what you think is fashion, but how much you epitomise the look of your surrounding culture. If I looked at my manager, she lives in and around people who are in an eternal 2002. Other workmates hang out with Oprah during the day (ah, not actually), and on my recent days off, I have noticed that the hair stylist on Oprah is touting the uncoutured couture look

Silver Springs

August 17th 2007 03:42
Initially metallic fashion appeared to me to be something of a transient trend. For some reason to me, if something is shiny and popular, then it will fade fast. It seems however, that silvers and golds may one day be the epitome of noughties fashion. It has survived several seasons now, and continues to make an appearance on the catwalk. In a decade’s time, will we look back and cringe at how much glimmer made its way into our wardrobe at the start of the 21st century?

For now, there are a plethora of options available to those who can carry off some glam metal. For the more formal wear, for cocktail parties and nights out clubbing, Filippa K amongst many, have created some very cute mini dresses in shiny fabrics like the one below.

With all the recent hype about the production of the sequel, "The Lost Boys 2", I was sent back to 1987, when the original film hit cinemas. The Joel Schumacher directed teen-horror flick includes a stellar ensemble cast including Kiefer Sutherland, Jason Patric, Dianne Wiest, “The Coreys” (Haim and Feldman), and Jami Gertz. The movie was named after the gang of eternal youngsters that follow Peter Pan through Neverland, echoing the immortality of the vampires. Check this clip for a cool montage of the film and its dark and sexy ambience.

Electric Dreams - 80's revival

My father was in the fashion business, or rag trade as it's more commonly known amongst those who are part of it. He told me something when I was a young girl that I've never forgotten. That is, when a fashion from a previous time is revived and presented to a new generation of young women, it's always the crass, kitschy, and, well, daggy stuff that seems to come back. Cos really....if it's stylish and has class, it never goes away.

I was so impressed with this Alexander McQueen creation above when I received it via a Net-A-Porter newsletter yesterday, it made me wonder about the style of dress. I was inevitably drawn into the 1940's and it has inspired me to write about the era today

Finally a style and fit for everyone, and a move away from the mini; there's something for everyone out there while this is hitting the celebrity pages and catwalks worldwide.

Disco Fever - Sparkle in Spring

August 3rd 2007 06:57
Studio 54 will be eating its heart out in the coming spring / summer when Sydney breaks out in shiny sequins to head out and boogie like its 1977. From haute couture to locals, the shiny and colourful is making a comeback. Sequins moved into the gauche for a while there, but it's back, and it's got its boogie on.

Tokidoki meets LeSportsac

August 1st 2007 11:55
When I first met tokidoki it was through a cute carry bag in which I found on a forum back in the ninth grade. Ever since then, I have fallen in love with this extremely cute brand which sells a range of merchandise from jewelry to bambinos to watches to belt buckles and now even t-shirts.

Just a few weeks ago, I was in my office kitchen and one of my colleagues had a very cute, tokidoki like backpack. I soon found out that the brand of the bag was called LeSportsac when I visited Singapore just two weeks ago and once again, I instantly fell in love with the design. Being a curious person, when I returned to Australia, I logged onto the LeSportsac website to take a look at their items only to spot possibly, in my opinion the cutest collaboration ever. Tokidoki had collaborated with LeSportsac
