100 fashion items no woman can live without
September 1st 2008 02:33
Personally, I'd just do without them, even if I was a woman.
But in case you're eager to have a list of more things you can throw money at, Nina Garcia, former editor of Elle and author of The Little Black Book of Style, has come up with a list of 100 essential fashion items for the modern woman.
Er... 100 items? That's hardly essential, is it? It's more like the extended-director's cut-never-seen-footage version, isn't it?
From the Guardian article:
"'In my years as a fashion director, I watched many fads come and go but also observed how certain items are always part of the rotation,' she said.
'Some may sit out for a year or two, but always come back. The colour may change, the fabric may change, the designer or brand might change, but in essence the items in my book have always been the backbone of fashion and, with a bit of sub-editing, each has been one of my touchstones.'"

Among those items considered to be the 'backbone of fashion': stupid, oversized Aviator sunglasses, and push-up bras. I plan to corner the market on push-up Aviator bras, though, denting Garcia's empire. You'll never see it coming.
Some strangely pleasing items on the list force me to swallow some of my pungent bile, such as 'old concert T-shirts' and a 'crisp, white shirt'.
Mmmm, Garcia may have struck Gucci oil there... I can think of few outfits more alluring than an elegant woman in a crisp, white shirt.
"Rather than being a rule book, what Garcia hopes she has written is a framework every woman can 'think and ponder. Style is a deeply personal expression of who you are, and every time you dress, you are asserting a part of yourself.'"

Formal occasion equals suit or tux. Smart casual Chinos and a collared shirt. Shiny black shoes with both and a black belt....Casual equals jeans and a T shirt. Hot day shorts and a tank top. Cold day add jacket to casual.
